How do you teach your children about maintaining a healthy lifestyle? I make sure to teach my daughter that there’s plenty to do inside and out that feeds our body, mind and soul.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Triple Play program stresses health and wellness and focuses on giving young people the tools and knowledge to put them on the path to a great future. The Boys & Girls Clubs around the country to operate Triple Play with national support from the Amerigroup Foundation and Coca-Cola.
There are lots of fun ways to be active at home and outdoors. If it’s a cold or rainy day, you can dance around to music, go roller skating or walk around the mall. We like to take walks through the neighborhood after work. As part of caring for our community, we often bring a plastic bag and collect random litter from local trails.
Participate in Community Events
There are many organized and impromptu activities that you can enjoy in your community with your children that stress health and wellness. Are you into running or walking? Many 5Ks and other fun runs involve children. My daughter and I ran our first 5K together last year through a girls running organization and we had a great time.
Make Healthy Food Choices
I started involving my daughter in the kitchen prep work and meal planning at an early age. Even little ones can help select menu items, help shop for groceries and assist in kitchen tasks. Soft produce like mushrooms and zucchini can be cut by little hands with a plastic knife. Older kids can follow basic recipes and take pride in preparing an entire meal.
“I FEEL BETTER WHEN” is a key mantra for Boys & Girls Clubs of America at the start of this New Year, as many people recommit to improving their health and wellness practices.
This phrase encourages us to look at how small, daily behavioral changes can have a long-term, lasting impact. Triple Play is focused on these types of healthy lifestyle changes at a young age. Consider including your family’s own “I feel better when” submission!
WE FEEL BETTER WHEN WE GET SOME EXERCISE. We have been enjoying evening walks after work/school and longer hikes on the weekends.
