We are firm believers that children need educational and fun hands-on activities outside of school both during the school year, and during the summer months. Before Lily’s kindergarten year ended, I had already planned out certain projects and purchased a workbook of various activities. Unfortunately, workbooks only hold a 6 year old’s interest for so long. Luckily, Groovy Lab in a Box helped us solve that problem!
We received a Groovy Lab in a Box kit that was filled with a number of experiments and activities revolving around the power of the sun.
Lily explored the various projects and decided to try the first one, a solar balloon. Since the product is geared for kids a bit older than her, we helped her work on the project and enjoyed talking about what we thought would happen. We taped together two black garbage bags and tied a fishing line to it, then went outside to find some sun. We did not have as much success as we would have liked as it was a partly cloudy day, but the best part of the project was discussing what we thought would happen, and why.
STEM•ist /stĕmʹĭst/ n. Expert in applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Creator, explorer, inventor…STEMist! Academics in a Box created Groovy Lab in a Box to encourage children to channel their inner STEMist.
Our purpose is to provide children with an opportunity to focus his or her imagination, determination, and innately inquisitive nature with a way to complete a monthly STEM project using the Engineering Design Process. By utilizing the Engineering Design Process, students are held to a variety of standards for their finished product. Most importantly, they are provided the opportunity to engage their imaginations and apply critical thinking to supply their own desired outcome.
Each month through our Groovy Lab in a Box subscription service, young STEMists will receive fun, hands-on projects and an engineering design challenge – all focused on that month’s STEM topic.
All STEMists will receive a Lab Notebook, where they can read about that month’s topic, perform investigation activities and document their findings. They will investigate, brainstorm, plan, build, test and redesign their own creations. STEMists also receive access to our special “Beyond…in a Box” online learning portal. This is a unique feature of Groovy Lab in a Box because it gives STEMists a deeper understanding of that month’s topic. “Beyond…in a Box” has videos and more interactive activities to supplement what they are learning from the box projects, which also helps the STEMist even more when completing the design challenge. Additionally, the monthly box contains bonus supplies exclusively for the activities available through “Beyond…in a Box.” Our product is geared towards children ages 8+.
