The first time I thought about protecting Lily’s personal data was during pre-Kindergarten registration. I received stacks of papers requesting her social security number, date of birth, immunization records, address, and a copy of her birth certificate. The school asked us to drop the paperwork at the front desk and that gave me pause. Assurances from the center’s staff that the personal files would be safe didn’t exactly leave me feeling warm and fuzzy, yet I had to provide the details to have her enrolled. I wondered where the paperwork would be stored, who would have access to it, how long it would be retained and how it was going to be disposed of eventually.
I turned to Bankrupt at Birth by Joe Mason and found it was a concise and easy read. As a parent, it spoke directly to me and gave me some good ideas on how to educate myself on this topic. I enjoyed the history behind the social security number. The real life stories were both eye-opening and a bit horrifying. I definitely felt motivated and empowered to start asking more questions about who really needs my child’s information and why. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a young child in their lives – parents and grandparents alike.
