Little Gardening Helper #WW

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

We are preparing for spring with a fresh layer of pine straw.  For you Northerners, that's the Southern equivalent of mulch.

Adam puts out about 50 bales in the spring and fall.  Luckily for me, I break out in a rash if it touches me so I am saved from this process.  The rash is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Lily has stepped up and taken my place in the process.  Such a good helper!

Wow that is very interesting. I would love to see a picture of your flower beds with the straw.

I am going to start a new trend here up north and use straw!

    I love Lily's hat.

What is it a frigid 60 degrees down there? lol! Stay warm!

How fun. I used to love preparing for winter, that is, until we moved to San Antonio where, apparently, there is no winter. I'll bet Lily was so proud of herself. :)

I love watching kids at work. It is nice when they help us out. Brad loves helping mow the lawn. Not sure what Emily likes to do yet...she just grumbles when asked to help with anything...oh, those tween years!

If I wasn't in NYC, where our nature comes in the form of potted plants, I'd probably come up with a rash too :)

Oh, she is a good helper.

But, I have to say, it's not a Southern thing...in Texas, we used mulch, too...my husband and I were dumbfounded the first time we saw people spreading pine straw instead of picking it up here!
