#HandyHubby Loses the Beard After 6+ Years

Saturday, February 26, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Adam's had a beard since after we got married in 2004.  Since then he's only shaved it twice while we were at the beach and the snorkeling mask would not stick well to a hairy face.  Here he is before.  I know, I know, he's a cutie.  Don't get too jealous.
Lily took an interest in the task.  Adam looked a little apprehensive at a 3 year old wielding a razor, so I took over.
Here is the clean-shaven man I love.  He looks like a baby!  I feel like I'm robbing the cradle!  Can we glue the hair back on?!
I think Lily and I laughed a minute too long, which resulted in the grumpy face below (Adam is hardly EVER grumpy).  I mean, can you blame us?  It's been 6 years for me and ALL of her life for her.  We had to laugh hysterically giggle.  We're used to the beard!  Hopefully one day soon he will grow it back.

CLOSED TollyTots.com Toys Princess Doll #Giveaway

Saturday, February 26, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Tollytots is a company with special emphasis on the girl's doll and accessory category. Their mission is to create unique and innovative products that combine classic toys with leading edge interactive technology. Tollytots wants to create a whole new play experience for children and their caregivers.

Tollytots has formed strategic licensing relationships with most trusted and recognized brands in the world including Fisher Price, Disney and Graco children's products.  Tollytots produces an extensive doll and doll accessory line under these leading brands.

MY THOUGHTS
Tollytots sent Lily an adorable Disney Rapunzel Toddler Doll with Vanity to review.  The doll is a Disney Princess Toddler doll and it is perfect for a child Lily's age (3-ish).  Lily was so excited she could barely contain herself.  As soon as I opened the package, Lily started brushing Rapunzel's hair and wanted me to tell her all about the story.  I did the best I could from memory but clearly we are going to need to track down the Rapunzel story book.

I was very pleased with the quality of the doll and vanity.  Lily enjoys dressing her and fixing her hair and using her imagination to set up a dinner or picnic for her new Disney Princess.

BUY IT
You can purchase the Disney Princess Toddler Doll at Toys R Us, Target or Amazon.

WIN IT
One US or Canadian reader will win a Disney Princess Belle Toddler doll! Lucky you!

Closet Flooring Re-Do Day Two #HandyHubby

Saturday, February 19, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

So, Day One of the closet flooring project was somewhat of a blur.  We examined the wood, planned the course of attack and moved a variety of crap stuff out of the closet to start pulling up the carpet.

Bright and early Saturday morning, Adam started to lay out the floor boards.  He quickly learned the instructions left much to be desired and plotted his own install method.  Lily and I sort of assisted.  I spent some time downstairs playing with her, then would run up, help pick the next several pieces, help to lock them in and then run down.  Phew - it was a good leg workout.  Remind me to do more stairs at the gym!
Lily came to supervise her mom and dad and was quite happy with the results.  I believe the words "can we have this floor everywhere" came out...giving me some ideas.  Adam quickly squashed my plans for an entire floor re-do but I'm fairly certain he'll soon forget the two miserable days of floor work and agree to my evil plans new projects.  Let's hope he's not reading this :)  Now I need to look at some new rugs for the closet!
Next I'll have to post pictures of the new granite countertops we had installed.  So pretty!  Or rather, it will be pretty once I spend a weekend repainting all the bathrooms whee we ripped up the old tiled counters.  Maybe next weekend...right now we're off to the playground for a play date!  Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!

CLOSED Big G Cereal & The Belly Fat Prescription #Book #Giveaway

Saturday, February 19, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Ninety-five percent of Americans do not get enough whole grain, according to the Report of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. In fact, the average person gets a little more than half a serving of whole grain each day. That’s significantly less than the three servings recommended daily.

Every Big G cereal contains at least 8 grams of whole grain per serving, with more than 20 Big G cereals delivering 16 grams or more. (At least 48 grams of whole grain are recommended daily.) A diet high in whole grain has been found to help with diabetes and weight management, and may help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers.

Weight management is more than just watching calories – it's also important to ensure you're getting enough of the good stuff. Big G cereals are made with whole grain and are nutrient-dense to help you start your day off right with brands you love, including Cheerios®, Lucky Charms®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Honey Nut Cheerios®, Fiber One® and Total®. Just look for the white check on the front of the box!

Frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights (and that includes people who choose sweetened cereals).Cereal eaters consume less fat, less cholesterol and more fiber than non-cereal eaters. Cereal consumption as part of an overall healthy lifestyle may play a role in maintaining a healthy body mass index.

According to “The Lean Belly Prescription,” by Dr. Travis Stork, MD and host of The Doctors, a large amount of research has shown that belly fat carries more health risks than fat stored elsewhere. In his book, Dr. Stork also offers several additional “Laws of Leanness,” including:

If you love to graze: Nosh all day long on your favorite fruits and vegetables to help keep your belly full

If you love fatty foods: discover which fats can actually strip away pounds

If you love soda: substitute more delicious drinks that can help you lose up to four pounds in four weeks.

Visit http://www.wholegrainnation.com/ for more tips, additional information about the benefits of whole grain and how Big G cereals can be a convenient and tasty way to help you manage your weight by incorporating whole grain into your day.

WIN IT
One US reader will win a VIP coupon for one Big G cereal and a copy of “The Lean Belly Prescription,” by Dr. Travis Stork.  Lucky you!

MANDATORY ENTRY
1) Tell me how you incorporate whole grains into your diet or what Big G cereals are your favorite?

This giveaway was closed - #235 Nancy - congratulations!

My First Panic Attack & Why I Won't Ever Shop at BCBG Again

Thursday, February 17, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

So a few weeks ago I blogged about my annual shopping trip.  Yes, I shop in the mall about once a year.  Leave me be, it works for me :)  Anyway...before I hit it big at Ann Taylor, I had an unfortunate experience at another retailer which I am now boycotting.

Stop #1 was BCBG. Now, I have a nice BCBG jacket (thanks, mom!) from last year that I love. I wasn't in love with anything I tried at the store but liked this nice cashmere wrap/sweater thing.  I decided to buy it.  Surely it would come in handy at work. I  was rung up, my card was swiped and I heard "that was $181.  You have 10 days to exchange it or return it for a store credit."
Um.  OK....WHAT?!  I left the store in somewhat of a daze. I bought something.  Great.  But wait.  Did I just pay $181 for ONE ITEM.  A sweater/wrap thing that I only kinda sorta like.  And I can't get my money back?  Um, OK.
So we shopped on.  The symptoms started at Ann Taylor. I felt hot/cold and slightly ill. The floor was kind of...moving or spinning a little.  I was pale.  I went to the dressing room basically to be able to sit down.  Did I just blow $181 on a sweater I CAN'T RETURN?!  What the heck type of store return policy does not allow for me to get my money back for a purchase?

After some consultation with my mother and sister, it was determined that I had a panic attack.  Of course, my sister claimed it was a pretty mild one since I didn't even vomit (thank god).  I don't know why it happened.  I can afford a $181 sweater, so it wasn't so much the money.  OK, actually it was.  I knew that I had set a budget of $500-1000 for my annual work-attire re-stock.  Knowing I had accidentally blown a large chunk of it on sweater made me panic!  I know, I probably should have checked the price before I walked up to the register but we were all under the impression that everything was 30% off.

Luckily, my sister went to return the offensive garment but despite her pleas, they WOULD NOT refund my money!  My wonderful mother who shops at BCBG occasionally bought the credit from me (thanks mom, AGAIN!).  I vow to never step foot in that store.  I know I should have paid more attention to the store's policies but I have never, ever heard of such a restrictive store return policy.  How come I can't return an item I purchased less than an hour ago?  Ridiculous!  Have you seen such absurd policies where you shop?

#WordlessWednesday - #HandyHubby Relaxing on his Deck

Tuesday, February 15, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

This beautiful deck took Adam all of 4 years to finally complete.  He truly got motivated to finish it once I threatened to burn the structure down.  Our yard is very hilly and the deck gives us some more useable space.  Here he is NOT working on a project but (gasp) reading and relaxing in the wonderful warm winter weather!  I am always amazed at how barren it looks in the dead of winter compared to the spring.

LilLuxe.com Sales Deals for the Week

Tuesday, February 15, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Swanky, Stylish, Suave – Make Way for LilLuxe.com!  We always desire to dress up our little loved ones in the best that is out there. Especially when the Elles and Peoples of the world daunt us with papparazi shots of fashionista moms and their starlet babies. But lets face it, most of us couldn’t afford those Gucci booties on Suri or the RL vest to match Brooklyn’s even if we took out a second mortgage. And we’re left hoping that high street fashion baby apparel and gear was a little bit more accessible and a lot more affordable. Well, that isn't ever happening – so aren’t you glad we made it just in time?

LilLuxe is an exclusive online buying club for infants and young children (up to age 7). LilLuxe provides its customers chic brands at discounts of 50% or greater.

How it works is that we host sales events for our members and send them an email to apprise them of the event. Items are limited and are sold on a first come first serve basis. The sales events are short lived too, so its best to grab your bargain as soon as possible.

The only way you can have access to these premium brands at such steep discounts is by becoming a member of our club.

Deals Beginning Tuesday February 15:

-Bobinette Layette: Bobinette’s layette collection is precious as ever. With its simple color palette, the tiny baby booties, wrap-style onesies, tees and jumpsuits can be easily mixed and matched with the rest of their little wardrobes

-Bobinette Kids: Bobinette designer Lorraine Le Tac draws inspiration from her Parisian upbringing in creating her eclectic yet versatile kids’ collection that she describes as “cosmopolitan with a French touch!”

LilLuxe members also get a $15 referral credit when their friends sign up & buy through the member’s unique invite link!

Want $10 off your order of $50 or more?  Sign up to be a LiLuxe fan on Facebook to get your promotional code.  You can also keep up with LiLuxe on twitter.

Fresh Cranberry and Orange Relish #Recipe

Sunday, February 13, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I first tried this delicious cranberry side dish at one of Adam's family Thanksgivings a few years ago.  I've loved it ever since.  It is fresh, light and delicious.

bag of fresh cranberries
2-3 oranges, peeled, some skins washed and saved
5 tablespoons sugar

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and chop.  Cool and serve.

From now on, all my recipes will be posted on my new recipe blog - RecipeObsessed.com.  I love love love to cook and have had quite a backlog of recipes so I decided to start posting them in a new place.  The new blog still needs a lot of work but I will be filling it with some good content soon!

CLOSED Flat Iron Experts BaByliss Curling Iron #Giveaway

Sunday, February 13, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

The Babyliss Pro Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron is rated #2 on our Best Curling Iron list for one reason alone and it is the price. If price wasn't a factor, this curling iron will for sure be the #1 choice. The Babyliss Tourmaline Ceramic Curling iron emits negative ions and far-infrared heat that brings a number of additional benefits to your hair.

The BaByliss Pro Tourmaline Ceramic Curling iron has the following features:
•5 barrel sizes available

•Unique POP-IN/POP-OUT temperature control
•Ultra-powerful heaters that provide fast, steady maximum temperatures
•Instant heat recovery
•40 heat settings
•Heats up to 428ºF(220ºC)
•Slim rubberized handles
•Tourmaline/Ceramic closes the hair cuticle resulting in smooth, glossy hair.
•Tourmaline/Ceramic plus heat emits NEGATIVE IONS which eliminate static electricity and neutralize odors and bacteria.
•Tourmaline/Ceramic barrels retain heat more efficiently, distribute it more evenly and eliminate damaging hot spots.
•Tourmaline/Ceramic radiates faster drying FAR-INFRATED HEAT, which dries hair from the inside but, preserving more moisture within the hair shaft and causing less damage to the hair cuticle.
•Extra long, heavy duty swivel cord
•Dual Voltage
•Two year warranty

MY THOUGHTS
My hair is in a weird stage right now.  It was chopped entirely too short last time so I have been growing it out.  I typically use a flat iron on it to smooth it out but I was excited to test out something new.  The BaByliss Pro 1 inch curling iron worked very well on my hair.  You can set the heat by hair type and lock it in.  I really like that this curling iron gives my rather thin hair some much needed bounce and body.  Because I have set it on a lower heat setting, the curls are larger and softer.  I was afraid I would come out loooking silly with a bunch of tight curls but the result was just perfect for me.  Even my husband commented on my hair!  I also like that Flat Iron Experts provides you with a 100% 30-day money back guarantee.  I did not include a before picture because really, it was scary.  Too scary to put online - Imagine flat, bed-head hair.  Ick!

WIN IT
One US or Canadian reader will win their own BaByliss Pro Curling Iron (ARV $119 - on sale for $84)! Lucky you!

MANDATORY ENTRY
1) Tell me what other curling iron or product you would like from Flat Iron Experts!

This giveaway is cloed.  The winner was #316 Michelle Murphy - Congratulations!

A Quick Wainscoting Project by #HandyHubby

Friday, February 11, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

We have a very small bar stool area that seems to get scuffed by shoes or slippers all the time.  I have re-painted it with the same old cheap flat paint but the scuffs come right back.  We contemplated tile or stone but I didn't want to spend a lot of money.  The solution?  An easy and quick wainscoting kit from the Home Depot!  Adam tackled the project and finished it in one afternoon.  I do need to paint it with some nice trim paint sometime soon.  Doesn't it look great?  Good job, Adam!

MY THOUGHTS
Dezign With a Z sent us an absolutely adorable set of hot pink butterflies for Lily's room.  Along with the big pink decal came two black butterflies and a bunch of red hearts.  We decided to cut the big decal into pieces so we could spread the butterflies out across Lily's wall.  The application process was very easy.  I used a flat spatula to press the decal into place.  I love the great selection of decals on Dezign's site.  There were many varieties that were perfect for your room - single color, bi-color, kids patterns, glow in the dark, mirror decals, laptop decals and more.

WIN IT
