Closet Flooring Re-Do Day One #HandyHubby

Sunday, January 30, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

My husband, he has an addiction.  He can't stop the random home improvement projects.  Occasionally, when he gets to a lull and claims bordome, I fuel his addiction but mentioning various items I would like "improved" in our already very comfortable home.

Recently I may have mentioned that the cheap, bunching and slightly stained carpet in my closet/bath could use an upgrade.  Our builder was a little odd creative and my big walk-in closet also houses my sink/vanity (new counters to come soon!!  Eek!).  One week later two pre-fab floor samples appear.  I commented briefly on the colors and then ignore them for the most part.  Suddenly I am told the flooring has been ordered.  Mental note - speak my opinion more clearly next time.  Adam ordered in my #2 choice but at this point I don't care because anything is better than cheap, bunching carpet.  And he got a good deal, so who can complain?  Not me!

The flooring arrives.  The husband gets to work.  He's in there now as I type, ripping out nails and carpet, occasionally vacuuming (double bonus!) and measuring.  I should probably help but I'm too busy snapping photos and writing this post.  Hey...he has his addictions and I have mine!  Adam claims he will get half done today while Lily is napping.  Somehow I highly doubt it but now duty calls and I must go assist.  I'll let you all know how it turns out!

30 Minutes to a Better You Fitness & Health Tips {Guest Post}

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

30 Minutes to a Better You is an article written by Jessica Costello.  Thanks to Jessica for the great tips and information!  This is not a compensated post.  I am personally trying to squeeze in 30 minutes of exercise to a better ME each day and thought you might enjoy her article!

One of the hardest parts of working out is finding the time to do it with all the chaos of everyday life. Everything moves at such a fast pace in today’s world that it seems almost impossible to find a moment to do something that benefits yourself and your health. This has never been more true than of Mothers.

Mom’s are some of the most hard working and busy people around. Between taking care of their families, their households, and their careers it seems like there’s never enough time to truly take care of themselves and this is especially true when it comes to exercising. However, some studies have shown that finding only 30 minutes a day to workout may be all that you really need to get a truly healthy benefit.

Researchers at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA held a study with 430 women to see the effects on 30 minute workouts with women of the average age of 57. What the study showed is that the women who did workout for at least 10 to 30 minutes a day had a better quality of life. In fact, it boosted the quality of their life along with their general health, vitality, and mental health compared to those who didn’t work out at all. This shows that working out even for a small amount of time can be really beneficial. But the question remains on what to do when working out and how to eat while doing so.

It is understandable that you may still have your doubts about only 30 minutes being effective, but it’s about more than just getting the body up and going. Considering that the goal in working out in quick spurts everyday is cutting fat and cutting it fast, it’s vital to put together a healthy eating regiment that will work with your 30 minute a day exercising routine. Eating food like lean meats (turkey is a great one to consider) and fish while avoiding foods heavy in carbohydrates and saturated fats can help burn calories quick and easy. That being said, it’s also important to work out in the correct manner and focus on the important areas of you body while doing so.

Fitness magazine presents a great routine for working out 30 minutes a day that includes (but isn’t limited to) steady paced cardio, strength training, and a cardio circuit that helps work the whole body. The best thing about this plan is that for some women who may not be confident enough to work out at a public gym it allows you to stay home and work with a home gym and it’s various fitness equipment like ellipticals.

Having children, looking after them, feeding them, etc. is a job in itself. As a mom you deserve to take time for yourself each day after putting everyone before you. This will not only help you stay fit but get you refreshed and ready to face the day!

CLOSED Piggy Toes Press Crayola Books Review & #Giveaway

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Piggy Toes Press is a children’s book publisher and the innovative creator of quality pop-up, novelty, board, gift and activity books.  Some of their more popular books include Eight Silly Monkeys and Ten Little Ladybugs.

Piggy Toes Press sent us two Crayola Wipe-Off activity books to review.  Lily was very excited to see these and wanted to try them right away, of course!  These are fun activity books for kids that can be used again and again.  I really like that the marker comes in a little plastic sleeve connected to the binding of the book.  You are sure to never lose it!  The books are recommended for children ages 4 and above.  Lily really enjoyed tracing the letters and shapes and singing her ABCs as she filled out the books.  I enjoyed being able to throw together a quick dinner while she explored her new books!

WIN IT
One of my US readers will win the same set of Crayola Wipe-off activity books that we reviewed.

MANDATORY ENTRY
1) Tell me who you would like to win this for or tell me about a favorite children's book.  Easy!

This Giveaway is now closed.  The winner was #190 shopannies - congratulations!!

This review and giveaway was made possible by Piggy Toes Press. Thank you to Piggy Toes Press for providing the product for review and giveaway! I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I paid for this review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Please refer to my Disclosure.

Deviled Eggs #Recipe (with many variations!)

Sunday, January 23, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

So, much like the sauted spinach recipe I posted the other week, deviled eggss, while oh so delicious, have always frightened me a little.  They seem so...difficult?  Last weekend I attempted the basic recipe I found on deviledegg.org and wow, how have I waited 32 years a rather long time to try to make my own deviled eggs?  Lily was such a fan she said, "Mommy, I want like, 21 of these!"

6 hard boiled eggs, peeled and cut lengthwise

1/4 cup mayonnaise
half teaspoon mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worstechire sauce
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 cut very finely chopped green onion
Paprika or bacon bits for garnish

Cut eggs, pop out yolks and mash together all ingredients in a bowl until well blended.  Scoop back into egg white halves and chill.  Enjoy!

A Taste of My Own Medicine

Friday, January 21, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

So, apparently little three year olds absorb all they see and hear.  The other evening I asked Lily a question and I got the following:

Lily: Hold on a minute, mommy, I have to send a quick email to my work.

Followed by a...

Lily:  Hold on, I have to call my work.  "Hello, yes, yes...oh ok, yes, I will do it in the morning.  Yes.  Thanks."  OK, mommy, now we can play!

I was somewhat amused and somewhat horrified...she was quoting me to a tee!  But you gotta do what you gotta do, right?

CLOSED Angell Organic Bars Review & Giveaway

Friday, January 21, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Christopher and Suzanne Angell have always loved candy bars but wanted them to be better for people and the planet.  They created Angell bars, from delicious organic and Fair Trade Certified® ingredients, so that everyone could enjoy an all-natural candy bar without compromising their values.

By making our bars Certified Organic and Fair Trade, you can indulge in a delicious treat, knowing that no toxic herbicides or pesticides were used to grow any of the ingredients, that Angell Organic Candy Bars do not support child labor or slavery, that no one is drilling oil wells to get fertilizer to grow these ingredients, and that no harmful runoff from these ingredients is ending up in our fisheries or our drinking water.
Angell Crisp, a classic combination of smooth, creamy milk chocolate and crispy rice. Every bit a candy bar, but gluten-free, and made from the same organic and Fair Trade Certified® ingredients as the rest. An instant favorite.

Snow Angell Bar, our sleeper hit. Everyone who tries it loves it. Even chocolate purists who think white chocolate is not chocolate. A subtler candy bar made from creamy white chocolate wrapped around a delicious, organic coconut center. No nuts whatsoever1. So good it gives you chills!

Dark Angell BarDark Angell, sophisticated and perfectly balanced. A refined combination of luxurious organic dark chocolate, wrapped around a smooth cocoa center with organic almonds for crunch. For those who prefer a more complex chocolate, the Dark Angell is the candy bar for you. Grab it. Eat it. Love it.

I TOTALLY LOVE IT
* Organic and tasty!  Their motto is great - "Eat No Evil"
* Three delicious flavors.
* All the chocolates are made with real cocoa butter - not cheap substitutes.
* Available on Amazon - I shop there often :)

This Giveaway is now closed - the winner was #326 kmogilevski - Congratulations!

I was not pleased to wake up to 5 inches of snow on Monday morning.  We live on a super hilly, one-lane road.  We were not able to leave the house until Friday afternoon!  Talk about stir crazy!  We worked from home the whole week and Adam also managed to build a cardboard/tape sled or two!Photobucket

5 Minutes a Day: My pantry will require SEVERAL days

Sunday, January 16, 2011 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I love my pantry.  I can't ever imagine living in a home without a spacious pantry.  But, I'm thinking for my 5 Minutes a Day project I'll need to tackle one shelf at a time unless I want to turn it onto 50 minutes a day :)  Here are two shots of each end of the pantry.  Funny thing was, when I showed these to my husband he said "what, this looks great!"  Men :)  Never mind that I just found a container of buttery sprinkles for popcorn that expired in 2002.  Ick!

This weekend we both tackled the pantry.  We sorted, tossed, cleaned.  Sadly, I only managed to organize three shelves.  Here's the progression of the day's activities...

The Before:

Got this wall organizer from Target...clearance for $14 bucks! Score!
The finished product!  I know, I know, I shouldn't get so excited over one shelf but really, it's a major improvement!  I had Claritin that expired in 2007...and it was UNOPENED!  Shameful, I know.  I'm trying to be better!
