Barbara's Bakery Review: Great Taste Without Compromise

Sunday, October 31, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Barbara’s products make a great fit for moms and their families because every item in the entire product line is made free of harmful ingredients such as hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors, preservatives and additives and high fructose corn syrup. As more families are choosing healthy lifestyles, they can turn to Barbara’s for all-natural products that they can both trust and the whole family will love. In fact, in honor of its 40th birthday, Barbara’s Bakery is making a stand and saying NO to the bad stuff, and YES to natural foods, and would like to encourage others to do the same!

What Did She Just Say?!

Friday, October 29, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Just a few weeks ago the sight of such a large box would have enticed my Lily into just about anything.  This evening?  She struts in from the car and her response to my excited "do you want to help me open this huge cool package?"

Is...and I quote...because I am drafting this post the very evening of this occurrence..."no, that's OK (?!?) you can use my red scissors to open it and I'll go turn on a show for one minute (?!?) while you make my dinner (?!?!), then you can surprise me with the box (?!?)."

Excuse me?  What?  Dang, don't I wish a home cooked meal took "one minute" and then what's this "turn on a show" business?!  Since when is my (just now) 3 year old watching TV at home?  Apparently since now, and she was too engrossed to even say "cheeeeese" as she normally does.  Look at the glazed stare below.  Where has my baby gone?!
Oddly enough, I didn't protest and she did go turn on a show (love PBS) and it took me all of 10 minutes to throw together dinner (I prep the night before).  I have to say it was...nice to actually cook alone without a "mommy, come see this."  Now granted, I love to come see whatever Lily's doing but sometimes something is about to burn on the stove and you have to see to the stove instead of the kid (sorry, Lily, I'm not your father). At the end of the day, Marlow the cat  was the only one who enjoyed the box. Lily showed up in time for dinner and said, "hey, do we have any cucumbers or tomatoes or something?" God I love that child!  Life is good.  But can someone please teach me how to make dinner in "one minute?"  Please?

CLOSED GoLite: Eco-Savvy Apparel Review & Giveaway

Friday, October 29, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

GoLite led the fast and light revolution and refined how people experience nature by thinking differently not just about weight, but about how outdoor gear is designed and built.  GoLite develops simple, beautiful, high performance gear that’s light on the planet.  GoLite's designs allow you to forget about your gear and live in the experience. By their very nature, GoLite's products have a smaller impact on the environment because they utilize fewer materials.
GoLite has developed stringent metrics and testing that help us maximize performance and durability and minimize each product’s weight.  This year GoLite was honored with Backpacker magazine Editors’ Choice Award, the most prestigious award in the outdoor industry, given annually to products in recognition of their outstanding innovation in design, materials and/or performance. GoLite’s extensive use of Tier 1 recycled fabrics won the “Green Award” and was one of only 15 innovative products honored with a 2010 Backpacker Editors’ Choice Award.

Stone Ranch Fleece Jacket

Cady 2477 Synthetic Insulated Vest
This cute vest features 100% recycled polyester face and lining and 3M Thinsulate synthetic insulation (50% Olefin- 50% recycled polyester). At 14 oz. the sleek Cady packs easily into a mesh stuff pocket for convenient self-stowing once you warm up running around with the kids.

MY THOUGHTS
GoLite sent me the Stone Ranch Fleece Jacket pictured here in the same awesome hot pink color to review.  The jacket is incredibly soft and very warm.  The fit is very true to size so the medium was the perfect fit for me.  I absolutely love the super soft furry interior.  The zippered pockets are a must for a mom (or woman!) on the go who doesn't want to worry about important contents slipping out.
GoLite also sent me the Cady 2477 Synthetic Insulated Vest.  Now, I am somewhat of a vest-fanatic and have tried many colors, shapes and sizes.  It is very difficult to find a comfortable fit without too much "poof" to the fabric.  The vest is perfect for slightly chilly weather and not to thick.  It cinches nicely at the hips and has a variety of pockets for all my essentials (key, lip gloss, blackberry).  I love this vest.  It more than exceeded my expectations, and I'm a pretty big vest snob.

Last but not least, how can I not love that these products are made with recycled materials?  I mean, I used to hoard my recyclables at work and bring them home when my office wasn't recycling (we are now - yay!).  I have taught my 3 year old about recycling and composting.  I have to admire a company that makes such cool stuff...from recycled materials.

WIN IT
GoLite has sponsored a giveaway of the same fantastic vest that I reviewed to one of my US readers. Lucky you!

CLOSED Glencara Irish Jewelry $50 Giveaway

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Based in Ireland, Glencara specialises in Claddagh & Celtic Rings and Jewelry since 1978. We are a family business, passionate about Irish & Celtic culture and the jewelry we create is based on celtic design and symbolism, centuries old.

Claddagh Rings & Jewelry
The Claddagh Ring is one of Ireland’s most popular rings and carries great symbolism - "Let love and friendship reign forever."

The beautifully designed Claddagh Ring is quite distinctive with its two hands clasping a heart and surmounted by a crown. It is a monument to love and friendship with the two hands said to signify friendship, the heart representing love with the crown symbolising loyalty.

How you wear a claddagh ring is of great importance; if worn on the right hand with the heart facing out, your heart has not yet been won. If worn on the right hand with the heart facing in, you are in love. And finally the claddagh ring can be worn as a wedding ring if worn on the left hand with the heart facing in; two hearts forever joined.

Celtic Rings & Jewelry
Celtic Jewelry dates back to 2000 B.C., evolving throughout the centuries and spreading across the world. Unique celtic designs are still used today as an expression of one’s individuality.

The Celtic Knot is the most well known celtic design, the beautiful simplicity of the triple knot symbolises eternity and continuity. The interlace pattern never ends and is the key to Celtic knot work. Many Celtic Rings incorporate the Celtic Knot along with other Celtic symbols.

The Celtic Cross pre-dates Christianity and were first used by pagans to worship the sun. In pagan times the circle of the celtic cross represented the sun, being the center of their lives. During the great conversion of many pagans to Christianity, Christian Philosophers adapted the Celtic Cross and thought the meaning of the circle to represent Christ, the center of Christianity.

Other Symbols such as the Celtic Spiral along with elements of the Ardagh Chalice and Book of Kells are at the heart of our Celtic Jewelry designs, as can be seen in the Celtic Warrior Ring.

Shutterfly's Holiday Cards & Offer for Bloggers

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

After Lily's birthday party celebrations were over, I finally had the opportunity to use some wonderful custom personalized thank you cards I had ordered from Shutterfly a few months ago.  If I am going to actually take the time to mail a card, I want it to be special.  The thank you cards I had ordered were very high quality and arrived quickly.  I have used up all my pretty thank you card's featuring Lily's big old cheesy grin, and now I'm on the hunt for holiday cards in preparation for the holiday season.  I know I want to send a photo card because I really enjoy getting photo cards from friends and family each year.  It's fun to see how kids (and families!) have grown.  I usually save the photo cards in an album and toss the other cards.

Some of my favorite holiday photo cards incluse a variety of pictures to highlight some of the fun things we have done as a family.  This holiday card is bright and would allow me to include three fun family photos.

The Ho Ho Ho card would be really cute for our family of three and I could include a head shot of each of us.

I also like the square holiday card because I could include several pictures of the family.  As you can probably tell, I like cards with lots of pictures!

Do you want 50 free holiday cards from Shutterfly? Click here to go to Shutterfly for information on how you can get 50 free cards this holiday season, and make sure to select Clever 1000 as the referral source.

This post is part of a series sponsored by Shutterfly. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

Saturday, October 23, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

PJ Greetings sells custom stationery, invitations, and most importantly, custom pre-inked stamps that are great for moms AND kids. These stamps get several thousand impressions so literally will last a lifetime. Used for addressing envelopes, identifying books (the library of), crafting (made especially for you by…) etc., you can think of tons of different ways to use them! The possibilities are endless!

PJ Greetings sells custom, eco-friendly, self-inking, personalized stamps that last 30,000 Impressions.  PJ's ink stamps are unlike anything on the market. She and her staff create each stamp design by hand. You can choose from eight colors of ink: red, blue, green, black, chocolate, orange, hot pink (mine!!) or purple.  When you order, you get a two day turn around to get your custom stamps.

MY THOUGHTS
I love to mail out holiday, birthday and thank you cards.  In this day and age, it is simply nice to get an actual card in the mail.  And what better way to customize your card than with a pretty custom address stamp?  PJ Greetings has such an extensive stamp collection that it took me about 20 minutes to look through and decide on just one of their stamps.  I liked some of the fun kid stamps, holiday stamps and pet stamps, but ultimately decided that I would use the address stamp most often.  PJ Greetings sent me the wonderful Square Polka Dot Border stamp to review pictured here.  I love the bright hot pink color and the cute design.  The stamp is well-made and I look forward to many, many uses.

WIN IT
PJ Greetings has sponsored a giveaway of a custom stamp of your choice to one US reader (ARV $40). Lucky you!

MANDATORY ENTRY
1) Visit PJ Greetings and tell me which stamp you would pick or tell me what other item caught your eye on their website.

TriDerma Pore Reducing Anti-Aging Serum Review

Saturday, October 23, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

TriDerma MD® Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum™ is a medical strength formulation that utilizes RefinaPore™, an exclusive dual ingredient that instantly helps to hide imperfections while improving the overall appearance of pores and skin texture. TriDerma MD® Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum™ works like a skin primer, but does more than just “fill in” pores. TriDerma MD® Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum™ softens and refines the texture of the skin and helps absorb excess oil for an overall smoother appearance. And it does all this without irritating your skin! This serum also contains ingredients such as AP4® Genuine Organic Aloe, a proprietary complex that naturally contains over 200 healing properties.

MY THOUGHTS
I am always open to trying a new lotion that prevents early aging, so I was happy to test out TriDerma.  The serum is smooth and delicate, and I was happy with how well it worked on my skin.  TriDerma does not contain any cortizone or parabens and is fragrance free.  I have combination skin with an oily t-zone and slightly enlarged pores so I was excited to put this serum to the test.  I have a problem with "thick" lotions or heavy creams during the day, but TriDerma did not leave my skin feeling oily or heavy.  By the end of the work day, my t-zone still looked smooth and shine-free.  After a few days, I did actually feel that my skin was smoother and softer.  I will definitely continue using this serum on my skin.

BUY IT
TriDerma MD Pore Reducing Anti-Age Serum is available at limited Walgreens and at http://www.triderma.com/ for $15.99.

Disclosure: This post was written for Family Review Network & TriDerma who provided the complimentary product for review in exchange for my honest review.

SunChips Compost Update - I'm Starting to Lose Hope

Thursday, October 21, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Back in early May, I dropped one of those crinkly, ultra-loud SunChips bags in my new compost bin to see if the claim that the bag is compostable is really valid.  In July I could still see evidence of the bag.  For the last month or two, I hadn't seen the bag, so I assumed it had broken down.  Success!

Last night, it reappeared after a good tumble in my bin (see the blue/green shape?  that's the bag).  So sad.  Darned you, SunChips!

SunChips claim = 14 weeks.
Picture shown here = 28 weeks in my (stinky, maggot-ridden) compost tumbler.

I'm deeply disappointed.  I guess my maggot-babies don't care to munch on loud, crunchy plastic bags :)  I'll keep waiting!

CLOSED Keller Williams "Kids" Bluegrass CD Review & Giveaway

Thursday, October 21, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

With the October 26 release of his first-ever album for kids and families – appropriately titled Kids – Keller Williams once again breaks new ground, proving his infectious spirit, quick wit and incredible musicianship speak to music lovers of all ages.
Long considered one of the most unique and prolific performers in all of rock and famed for his awesome multi-instrumentalist skills, Keller Williams has won the hearts and imaginations of a seething tide of young adults. Over the last seven years, Keller has sold more than 275,000 CDs, and he plays approximately 100 shows each year. Major festival appearances in 2010 include Telluride Bluegrass, Mile High Music Festival, All Good, Smilefest, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and more.
MY THOUGHTS
I have not heard the whole CD since I let Lily and her daddy take it in his car to review, but Adam tells me he is a big fan.  After the first day, Lily was singing something like "don't pick your toes and then pick your nose because then your nose will smell like your toes" followed by "sitting in my car seat, laid baaaack" and "mama tooted."  It was highly entertaining to hear Lily tell me about the songs...and made me want to hear the whole CD :)  According to Lily and Adam (they are hogging it in his car) - it was a hit!  The silly songs made them laugh and enjoy the music on their drive to daycare.  Who can say no to that?  You can visit the Keller Williams KIDS site and listen to "Car Seat" - while you are there, you can also download the free MP3 of Car Seat - super cute!

WIN IT
One of my US or Canadian readers will win a copy of this CD.  Lucky you!

MANDATORY ENTRY
1) Let me know why you would like to win this CD, or what your kids like to groove to these days.

This giveaway is closed.  The winner was #67 yyeres
