Apparently Lily and I are not the only ones that love to get packages in the mail.  Marlow made himself quite comfy on the other day's shipments.

Mad Gab's Wildly Natural Bodycare Review

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

What is Mad Gab's?  They are a fun bunch of hardworking folks who have been making natural body care since 1991 when the founder stumbled across a recipe for lip balm and thought it looked easy enough to make.  Armed with beeswax from her neighbor and supplies from a local health food store, Gabrielle went to work in her mother's kitchen.  The rest is history!  Mad Gab's is now located in a 4500 square foot space in Westbrook's Dana Warp Mill, where they make, ship and sell their wonderful products.   What started out as a solo journey in my mother's kitchen has become an unbelievable collaboration of talents and a wild ride with no end in sight!

Cleanlogic Bath & Body Care Review

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Cleanlogic Bath & Body Care offers a wide variety of products for the shower, bath and body.  Their products are innovative and not overpriced.  Recently I was lucky to review the Cleanlogic Round-Dual Texture Exfoliating Accessory, Stretch Bath + Shower Cloth and the Soap+Sponges pictured below.  Thank you, Cleanlogic!
I am a lotion and potion junkie.  My way of relaxing at the end of a long day is to indulge in a long shower and a facial.  I know most people shower in the mornings, but my human alarm clock (AKA Lily, my 2.5 year old daughter) wakes me before 6am most mornings so ever since her arrival nearly 3 years ago, we have gotten used to showering in the evenings.  Sounds weird to most of you, but we love it!  We marvel at how we were ever able to go to bed filthy after a long day before.

Crazy Coupon Mommy offers a lot of awesome information on her website for parents like us who like to get a deal.  Her content is organized well and you can browse Coupons (neatly organized by category) and Deals By Store (particularly CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and Target).  She shares tips for earning money through surveys or email programs, crazy freebies lists (including general and baby related), recipes, a searchable coupon database, reviews/giveaways, rewards programs and more.  The website is laid out well and the information you want is easy to find.

During the month of July, Crazy Coupon Mommy is hosting a Sizzlin' Summer Sweeps 31 days of AMAZING giveaways!  I know I'll be visiting each day in July to enter - I LOVE entering giveaways!  There will be a lot of high value prizes up for grabs like the new Flip SlideHD, a digital color video baby monitor, the Boon Flair High Chair, and lots more.

Lily doesn't wear diapers during the day anymore, but I still use them on her overnight and love that Crazy Coupon Mommy has both Huggies and Papmers rewards points listed on her website. Don't want those rewards points to go to waste! There are also lots of great deals posted on photo books and pictures, and I know I am way behind on printing all the pictures I've taken this spring and summer.  I also love the recipes, since I enjoy experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen.  Check out Crazy Coupon Mommy for your own special deal!

Easy (and Free!) Way to Propagate Your Shrubs

Saturday, June 26, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

One of my favorite activities is gardening. I had posted previously how easy it is to save your own seeds to plant in your own garden or share with friends. We have found a quick and easy method for propagating shrubs, too. There are a lot of methods out there for propagating plants. I'm busy. I don't have time for complicated methods. How do we propagate our shrubs?

Step one: during pruning season, take some of the branches off your shrub and simply jab them in the ground somewhere where you would like another shrub to grow. I usually use a 2 foot long branch with some leaves on top. We have had most success with hydrangeas and azaleas.

Step two: move on with your life and hope for the best. Survival of the fittest, baby.

I can't tell you how many new hydrangea and azalea bushes in my yard are the result of my husband simply sticking a cutting right into the ground. I was amazed that one hydrangea stick from about 3 years ago is now a giant, flowering shrub about 5 feet wide and tall. The vase of flowers is from one we grew from scratch...or, from "stick."

Potatoes Sprouting Again. Need Help Meal Planning!

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Apparently it's not just sweet potatoes I neglect.  Even good old plain yellow potatoes are sprouting in my pantry!  Oy.

Recently I have also noticed that we eat a frozen pizza for dinner almost every other week. Double oy.

Reform is in order.

I love to cook and to try new recipes, but I need to make dinner when I get home from work FAST (or face Lily's hunger-meltdown). My summer resolution: plan our meals/groceries better.

Someone recently told me to use a plain wall calendar to plan out a week's worth of meals before hitting the grocery store. I think I will try that this week and see how it goes. Any other tips? Hints? Advice?

Cucumber, Tomato and Couscous Salad

Sunday, June 20, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

This is one of my favorite summer salads.  You can use it as a side item (great with fish!) or eat it as a meal.  It is quick, easy and fresh!

1 large tomato, slicked and diced (I remove seeds - they make the salad soggy)
1 large cucumber, diced
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley (or your favorite herb)
1 box of couscous or tubule, cooked
1-2 tablespoons olive oil
fresh lemon juice (optional)
fresh ground pepper
salt

Mix it all together and enjoy!  I prefer to serve this chilled.  Our whole family enjoys this yummy salad.

CLOSED MopTop Review and Giveaway

Sunday, June 20, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

MopTop, Inc. is a hair care line formulated to tame dry, frizzy and unruly hair.  The creator was inspired by her own crazy hair to develop the line - her nickname in school was "Fuzzy!"  She tried many products, without success, and after much reading and research, she decided to create her own line of hair care products.  MopTop (for you and me) and FuzzyDuck products (the ADORABLE kid's version!) are designed to help tame dry, frizzy, unruly, color treated and chemically treated hair, without the usual build up. There are no silicones, waxes or sulfates in these products, and there is no alcohol in the styling products.

MopTop sent us both the MopTop and FuzzyDuck travel kits to review.  Living in Atlanta, we are usually dealing with sticky, humid weather so we tried these great products right away.  This past weekend we traveled north to Tennessee for a family gathering, and the travel kit was perfect for the trip!  Each kit allows for plenty of uses and is packaged in a plastic container.  My daughter loved having her "own makeup" products, and we enjoyed the scent.  It reminded me of coconuts, which I love.  Yum!  The products were great on my newly highlighted hair and on Lily's fine, dry locks, too.  We have sometimes skipped washing her hair during bath time since it is very dry and fine.  Frequent shampooing dries it out even more, but FuzzyDuck was wonderful on her hair!

CLOSED Mineral Basics Review and Giveaway

Sunday, June 20, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Mineral Basics began in 2004 as a means to provide all natural cosmetics to people with all skin types and tones across the globe. Chandi, the founder, has personally had dealt with self-esteem-deflating skin issues for most of her life: terrible acne, inflamed skin, oiliness AND dryness, flaky skin, etc. She happily discovered mineral makeup and began manufacturing her own brand. Mineral Basics sells loose mineral powders that buff beautifully and easily into your skin.  Mineral Basics offers mineral foundations, blush, multi-use minerals in shimmer and matte colors, concealers and correctors, finishing powders, and more, to meet all of your cosmetic needs. Mineral makeup contains no irritants, preservatives or fillers to aggravate your skin. It is just pure, natural mica and minerals, blended together in soft, silky harmony.

Chandi sent me 15 product samples to try.  I chose a handful of foundations, blushes and eye shadows to find out which colors worked best on me.  I had tried mineral makeup before and was really looking forward to testing out some new colors.  I actually ended up blending two of the foundations together for the perfect look for me.  The eye shadow and blush samples go a long way so I was able to get a lot of use out of these.

CLOSED Nature's Gate Review and Giveaway

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Nature's Gate was founded over 30 years ago when the founders hand collected rainwater, blended it with natural herbs from their herb shop, and created the very first Rainwater Shampoo.  Nature's Gate continues to be inspired by their surroundings and creates formulas that combine proven botanical, herbal and floral treatments with modern ingredients and techniques. Nature's Gate offers a wide range of products that address personal care needs from the inside out. Using all-natural herbs and pH-balanced formulas, each product is carefully formulated to deliver the many benefits of each unique botanical blend. All of the Nature's Gate products reflect ongoing efforts to preserve the earth's natural resources and develop sustainable sources of clean water.

I received the three products pictured here for review.  The Persimmon & Rose Geranium Color Protecting Conditioner left my hair bouncy and light, and has a wonderful scent.  I also like to use it on my daughter to keep her hair from getting tangles.  I feel good knowing I am using an organic product on my child - and myself!  I really enjoy the Pomegranate Sunflower Skin Defense Lotion scent and texture.  It is not greasy and a great body lotion.  I let Lily use it on her little body, too, since she wants to "put makeup on like Mommy!"   Last but not least, we tried the Chamomile & Lemon Verbena Lotion for All Skin Types.  It has a wonderful, mild scent and a great texture.  I think would be nice near the kitchen sink or in a powder room for guests to use after hand washing.  Nature's Gate carries wonderful liquid hand soaps, too, for your kitchen or bath.

Pictures From Our Beach Vacation

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

We had a lovely time in Perdido Key, Florida.  This is our fourth year coming to the area, and this year my parents joined us from Chicago.  Lily had a blast seeing her grandparents and frolicking in the water all week long.  Perdido Key is such a family-friendly place to stay!  The beach was littered with tar balls only a week after our departure.  It breaks my heart to think of oil devastating this wonderful beach and the surrounding areas.  I am wishing for a quick recovery for the whole gulf, but clearly that is more wishful thinking on my part given the amounts of oil still spilling into the gulf.  We had a wonderful time and plan on returning eventually!

Since she's now two and a half, Lily was much more comfortable with the ocean and the pool.  When we went for morning walks along the beach, Lily liked to walk closest to the ocean so the water splashed up her legs and body.
What I appreciated more than anything was the week together, regardless of the location.  My husband and I both work full time so we value family time.  It was so hard to go back to work after a whole week of Lily -   the kid is a hoot!  We also enjoyed having my parents there, since we see them so rarely.  Why did I ever leave Chicago for Atlanta?  Oh yeah...the hubby's job search at TheLadders lead us to Atlanta!

Our next vacation is a trip to Tennessee for the mother in law's second marriage, then another short beach trip over Labor Day, then a trip to Disney!  I have been researching Disney World packages for a little while and getting close to settling on a hotel.  We will go close to Lily's third birthday, and I am sure we will all have a wonderful time.

I Love Having a Handy Husband!

Friday, June 11, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I just love having a handy husband around the house, and mine can do just about anything.  Adam installed crown molding and fixed the dishwasher after it flooded.  He wired a new outlet in the utility room (hmm...maybe I need to get him some good life insurance).  He caught the flying squirrel that invaded our attic.  He built a big, beautiful trellis for my climbing plants.  He's climbed on the roof countless times to try to fix a leak (REALLY need to hurry on that life insurance!).  He built us a lovely deck (it did take 4 years to complete but who's counting?  Oh...I am!).  He's done so many other handy things that are simply escaping me right now so I'll stop this long list.

Recently Adam decided to build some drawers for our walk-in closet.  The closet is great and has a ton of built-in open shelving.  I'm not sure exactly what spurned this project - maybe he was getting low on other household tasks and wanted a new challenge - or maybe I nagged about his clothing piles looking a little rough around the edges :)  Regardless of the motivation, we now have two drawers each AND I have a new drawer for all my makeup!  I believe this did take several Home Depot trips, many hours, some spilled paint, and who knows what cost...but it was well worth it for a happy wife and a satisfied do-it-yourself husband!

CLOSED elliotjack designs Jewlery Review & Giveaway

Friday, June 11, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Aah, jewelry.  I love it.  What I love even more than just jewelry is finding another woman (and mom!) out there who creates fantastic pieces.  Kimberly is a busy stay at home mom with two little boys, ages three and one.  During her free time, Kimberly has been working on a creative endeavor - elliotjack designs.  The elliotjack Etsy shop carries necklaces, bracelets and earrings using natural stones, swarovski crystals and czech glass with sterling silver.  Kimberly hand makes all of her jewelry and is constantly designing new pieces.  She also offers custom items if you have a particular style or design in mind.  Her pieces are modern, yet have a classic design.
