Thank you, Celine!

Monday, May 31, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

A few weeks ago I hosted a review and giveaway of a purse from Blue Calla.  It was a hit and received a ton of entries.  Since then, I have enjoyed seeing the cool new items Celine (owner of the Blue Calla Etsy shop) has posted on Facebook and in her shop.  We have also become good online friends - I mean, she's in Canada, I'm in Atlanta, online is about all we can do right now :)  Too bad we don't live closer!  Recently she has sewed some adorable toddler back packs and I commented on how cute they were.  Celine surprised me by shipping one of her adorable handmade creations to me (OK, to Lily!) as a thank you for hosting her giveaway.  It is the cutest little backpack and Lily had to try it on immediately.  These pictures really do not do it justice but I thought it was so cute how Lily was posing and parading around in the backpack.  How cute is that kid...and backpack?!  The last weekend Lily stuffed her dollhouse characters in it to take along when we went out to eat.  The backpack was so adorable that I ordered one for my niece's birthday.  Good thing her mommy doesn't read my blog so she will still be surprised :)
Anyway - this post a big THANK YOU to Celine!  You were too kind to send this to us!  Feel free to check out her shop if you are in need of something special...or just want to support a very special seller!

We are enjoying the beach this week!

Monday, May 31, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

We made it to Perdido Key, Florida (for those of you that don’t know, it is on the border of Florida and Alabama)! It is simply gorgeous down here, and we are so glad the area is thus far unaffected by the oil spill. I wish I hadn't spent hours worrying about our vacation plans since everything seemed to turn out perfectly. My parents are here from Chicago and Lily's having a wonderful time with her grandma and grandpa. We take long strolls in the mornings and hunt for shells, then spend some time in the ocean and pool. Much to our dismay, the little hole in the wall restaurant has closed and we haven't been able to find a lunch place that compares. The last meal we had consisted of overcooked fish and my veggies were......green beans FROM A CAN. Oh well, we'll keep looking.

My best little helper

Friday, May 28, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I think children need tasks.  They need to feel like they are a good contributor and helper.  I always tell Lily that she is my very best helper (sorry, Adam!) and she loves hearing it.  Even though tackling a task with her takes five times as long, the satisfaction of seeing her smiling face when the task is done is worth it.  I love my helper!

Many evenings after dinner we head outside to check on the garden and just get some fresh air.  Lily's favorite task is watering our herbs and checking the rain gauge she built with her daddy.  Lily is a huge basil fan...eats it like most kids eat candy...and our basil has had tiny holes in it recently.  I'm not sure what bug has been doing the damage but yesterday I heard Lily shrieking "bug, bug mommy!  The bug is eating my basil!"  Sure enough, she was right and there was a bug on the basil.  I'm not sure if this is the culprit or what type of bug this is (maybe the hubby will tell me when...I mean IF...he reads this post) but I picked it up (yes, with my BARE hand) and threw it far, far away down the back hill.  Stay away, bugs.  That basil is all for Lily!

Who Manages Your Household Finances?

Friday, May 28, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Who is the one responsible for balancing the budget and paying the bills in your household? For us, that person would be me. I make sure that all bills are paid on a timely basis to avoid any late fees. We use a credit card for almost everything we purchase so that we can take advantage of the cash back rewards. I know some people are weary of using credit, but if you use it responsibly and pay off your balance each month, it can be quite rewarding. We only purchase the items we need and can afford, so we do not have to worry about paying the extremely high finance charges. We typically get about $600 a year back on our credit card purchases. What is even better is that this reward is tax-free - this is not like interest income on your savings account that you have to report on your taxes. I love the cash back on my credit card!

We're Planning a Trip to Disney World!

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Have I mentioned how excited I am about heading to the beach in only 3 days! I AM SO EXCITED! I have a long to do list of things we need to take care of before we pack up the car to drive to Perdido Key, Florida, but I am sure we will get it all done (especially since I am delegating a bunch of the tasks to the hubby, tee hee!). This weekend we sorted through Lily’s old water toys, cleaned and dried her sandbox toys to pack up and stocked up on sunscreen. It will be a little tricky driving the six hours down since Lily is potty trained now, but I think we will figure it out somehow. I also have a long packing list which I keep in a Microsoft Excel file and organize by person. Yes, I am an accountant by day :) Love Excel!

After our beach trip next week, we are also planning a trip to Orlando later this summer or early this fall and looking at some Disney World packages. I am so excited to see Lily's reaction to Disney World and the Disney Princess characters! She will be closer to three at that point and I hope she enjoys it. I think the timing of our trip will be great since we are hoping to go once school is back in session with the hopes that the parks are not quite as crowded as they are during the summer months. My parents and sister will probably be joining us from Chicago – hello babysitters! Since we will be going closer to Lily’s birthday, we may try to plan a little birthday celebration while we’re in Disney. Any suggestions for attractions or events while we’re there? This will actually be my first time to Disney World as well.

CLOSED Coco Bonbons Review and Giveaway

Monday, May 24, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

The first line presented by Coco Bonbons was for the Fall 2006 season, and it was an instant success! Over 100 stores chose the children’s clothing initially and that number has quickly multiplied.  Using a bright color palette and clever design features, Coco Bonbons has taken some of the universal loves of children and brought them to life on coats and separates. Parents will appreciate the quality fabrics and detailed embroidery of these wearable works-of-art while children will treat the clothes like a favorite toy - they won't go anywhere without them.

The Founder, Coco Kyriopoulos, holds an MBA from University of Chicago (my college alma mater!), a BA from Vanderbilt University and a “MOM” from Charlie (4 years) and Phoebe (2 years). After 12 years in investment banking and business, she decided to combine her creative skills, business acumen, and love of children to start coco bonbons™. Inspired by her friends’ children and her own, Coco names each one of her designs after them and draws upon what they love most.

Lily received their adorable Whale Peasant Dress and Whale Knit Bloomer to review.  I got a cute picture of her checking out her bloomers, but decided maybe that wasn't best to post online :)  She enjoys her dress and asks to wear it often, then spins around like a little princess.  She told me "see my whales, mommy, this one has eyelashes!"  And yes, I may have lured her into posing nicely with a popsicle - but it also served the duel purpose of being a potty reward!

BUY IT
You can purchase Coco Bonbons clothing online or at a variety of locations near you. You can find cute coloring pages on their website as well!  For Atlanta moms, if you happen to be in the Phipps Plaza boutique (2nd floor) you can mention Busy Working Mama for 15% off through until the end of May.

CLOSED Uneaks Shoes Review and Giveaway

Monday, May 24, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Uneaks patented customizable footwear are sneaker style shoes with side clear panel windows and specially designed socks that allow kids to continuously customize their shoes by simply changing their socks. Pair the shoes with any of Uneaks’ double-sided decorated socks for footwear that is fun and chock full of personality.  Lily was able to review a pair of these fun shoes and socks.  She was entertained by the fact that the socks had a different pattern on each side and we had to spend significant time examining each pair of socks she received.  I tried to capture her on film wearing her new shoes but the pictures leave much to be desired.  She's too fast for me!

EBOOST Daily Health Booster Review

Monday, May 24, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I know it is good for me, but I dislike drinking water.  I have to force myself to chug a big old glass in the mornings and at night.  During the work day I typically drink hot tea and diet soda (only one a day, I promise!).  I recently had the opportunity to review EBOOST's daily health booster.

Cleaning Out Lily's Old Baby Toys

Monday, May 24, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

How is it that my little baby is going to be turning three in October? Where has the time gone? Yesterday she truly showed just how big she was getting around nap time. Lily is an awesome napper and is out 12-2 like clockwork. For some strange reason, this weekend she has been fighting her nap and not falling asleep till past 1! All was quiet and I was busy folding laundry but for some reason I was tempted to go check on her. A good hour after I left her in her bed, I find her wide awake! Lily sits up and I notice she is not wearing the same pants she was wearing when I put her to sleep! After a few seconds of confusion, I asked her, um, what happened to your pants, honey? To which she responds, "Mommy, I had a poop and a pee and my pants got turned inside out so I had to get new ones." Sure enough, the inside-out pants were laying neatly on the edge of her bathtub in the adjoining bathroom. The most entertaining thing of all was that she had put on her panties, THEN her pull-up, then her new pants over the pull-up (we still keep a "just in case" pull-up on for nap and overnight). Stinker! Both the closet doors and the bathroom door had been nicely shut and had she been able to put her original pants back on, I would have been none the wiser! My big girl!

CLOSED Pantene Review and $25 Walmart Giveaway

Saturday, May 22, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Welcome to the world of Pantenology.  Pantene wants you as a Pantenologist to determine which of their new customized solutions is right for you. Pantene has changed the way they look at hair care. Applying cutting-edge research tools, Pantene Pro-V scientists gained a new understanding of the physical and chemical properties of hair structure.

Pantene provided me with the Pantene Scientific Hair Test to try on my hair.  The kit included shampoo for fine, medium-thick, curly and colored hair.  I have relatively fine hair so that was the first solution I tried.  The shampoo and conditioner left my hair bouncy and did not weigh it down.  I also went a little nuts recently and......colored my hair so the color solution was next on my list.  The color conditioner was probably my favorite - it

CLOSED Pillow Pets Review and Giveaway

Saturday, May 22, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Do you find an over-abundance of stuffed animals in your home?  Do you dread birthday parties because you know you will only add more stuff to your collection of kids toys?  I recently went on a "sping cleaning" frenzy and cleared out some drawers (found holiday cards from 2003...really do I need these?!) and went through some of Lily's baby toys.  Lily was on board with me and said "mommy, we gotta send all these baby toys to a baby."  Smart girl :)

The Pillow Pets concept was born out of a cleaning session much like mine when a San Diego-based mother of two grew tired of picking up stuffed animals strewn across her children’s rooms. What began with the simple goal of transforming a simple stuffed animal into a functional item for children has grown into an amazing jungle of popular retail and wholesale products.  Made of ultra-soft chenille, Pillow Pets are extremely popular. With a strap that closes underneath to transform the pillow into a friendly pet, they are an ideal travel pal, naptime buddy and all-around snuggly friend. Pillow Pets are available in jungle animals, farm critters and sea creatures – 20 different animals to choose from.

Heading to the beach in a week...please oil, stay away!

Friday, May 21, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

For the last few years, we've been driving down to Perdido Key (on the border of Florida and Alabama) to spend a week at the beach.  It has become a very convenient destination especially after Lily was born.  She takes long naps and is in bed by 7:30pm so Adam and I sit on the balcony and listen to the ocean, people-watch and just relax.  We have our favorite hole-in-the-wall lunch place for delicious blackened amberjack sandwiches and discovered another fancier restaurant with outdoor seating and live music for dinner.  We play in the sand, the pool and hot tub.  Usually we're up early to watch the sunrise and take a walk to collect shells.  I absolutely cannot wait to go!  My parents are joining us this year from Chicago so maybe we'll actually get a date night out with babysitters on hand?!  Double exciting!  I will have to post some pictures when we return.  I have my fingers crossed the dirty old oil will not pollute the beautiful beaches of Perdido Key or the surrounding areas.  I need a vacation so badly!  The picture here is from last year.  We dug that ditch (that was a workout!) every day to make a little baby pool.  Are you going anywhere fun this summer?  I would love to hear about it!

Corn and Potato Veggie Chowder Recipe

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

A few weeks ago I discovered the awesome Farmers Market Baskets near me and blogged about what a great deal they are.  We've gotten one every week and try to go through the fruit and veggies before the next basket.  In an effort to use up some of the veggies, I made a big pot of this yummy chowder.  This recipe served MANY so if you prefer a smaller version, cut the ingredients down by a third.  We like to take leftovers to work for lunch.

Some recent pictures

Sunday, May 16, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I couldn't resist sharing some pictures of my little cutie.  I'm trying to catch up on organizing/editing/uploading the last month's worth of pictures.  A mommy's work is never done!

Hogging both of the hopper dogs.  Good thing she shares when friends come over :)
My future track star...following in mommy's footsteps, maybe?  Great form, Lily!

That can't be comfortable...but apparently Kicia begs to differ!

Coupon Chief Website Review

Sunday, May 16, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Do you use coupon codes when you shop online?  In this economy, more and more people are trying to get a good deal when they make a purchase.  I personally prefer shopping online most of the time since I can compare prices quickly, find a great deal, and get items shipped directly to me.  For me, the focus is on saving not only money, but also on saving time.  I am a busy working mama, after all, and time is precious!

Recently I discovered http://www.couponchief.com/, a website that has an incredibly large library of coupon codes for an incredibly large variety of stores.  Their codes are organized well with clear expiration dates and terms.  You can search by specific store or by item.  Typically, my "go to" places online are eBay, Amazon, and Target.  I was surprised to be able to find eBay codes available on Coupon Chief.  To be honest, I didn't know eBay even took coupons, but I am going to have to check this one out!  Since we are also hoping to head to the beach the first week of June (please oil, please stay away from Perdido Key!), I am in search of swimsuits for the whole family, especially for Lily since she is growing like a weed.  I have an unused gift card to Bloomingdale's and was able to find some great Bloomingdale's coupons on Coupon Chief...new swimsuits for one and all!

Vitalicious sent us a huge box of delicious muffin tops and brownies to sample.  Thank you!  We were instructed to keep these frozen, and each morning I see my husband taking out a yummy Vitalicious muffin top from the freezer to defrost for breakfast.  Of course, we never froze the brownies since they disappeared in...oh, one day's time?  Lily enjoyed getting a bite of brownie and washing it down with milk but told me "remember, I don't like nuts, mommy, so you eat those parts."  My husband and daughter absolutely loved the mint chocolate muffin tops, so these disappeared quickly.  I am quite partial to the cranberry bran muffin tops myself.

BUY IT
Vitalicious products are sold at stores nationwide (see store locator) and at www.vitalicious.com.  They also sell muffin mix on their website.  You can follow Vitalicious on Facebook as well.  As a busy working mom, I definitely appreciate having ready-made, healthy food on hand.

Moving to my own domain - lost comments?! Advice?

Friday, May 14, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

So exciting!  I am going to be moving my blog to a custom domain (all right....you got me, my wonderful husband will be doing it for me.).  However, there are some issues with moving to a custom domain since comments are "lost" for a while...some bloggers have waited 2-3 weeks for comments to come back.  I contemplated halting the giveaways, but I really do not want to since I have a bunch of great ones in the queue.  I think I may take a screenshot of all the comments "before" the move and then continue the giveaway "after" the move. Who knows...maybe it will go well but the first attempt resulted in lost comments so he switched me back to the ".blogspot" address. For those of you that enter the giveaways - would that concern/irritate you?  For you other bloggers that have made the move, any advice?  Thanks in advance!

CLOSED TinySoles Shoes Review and Giveaway

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

TinySoles is a shoe store dedicated to providing the most complete selection of stylish, comfortable shoes for babies, infants, toddlers and kids. TinySoles specializes in age appropriate footwear and offers the best collection of flexible, soft sole shoes for little feet. TinySoles was started by three mothers on a SOLE search for quality, development appropriate footwear for our infants.  These moms personally test all of the shoe brands on their own kids first and if they don’t love them, they won’t sell them.

TinySoles also offers accessories like tights, socks, hats, bags and even music.  TinySoles sells a large selection of soft and stretchy, all natural, completely sustainable, itch free, stay cool in the sun and warm in the snow, machine washable, super cute wool socks and accessories. They also have over 100 styles of BabyLegs in stock - these are the perfect accessory for your diaper bag! In an attempt to cut down on plastics in the environment and limit BPA exposure to our kids, TinySoles carries the Klean Kanteen line of stainless steel sippy cups. TinySoles is also a great place to buy Baby shower and newborn gifts, too!

TinySoles was kind enough to send this lovely pair of pediped Flex Joelle shoes for Lily to review.  She had a blast opening the lovely wrapped package (as you can see from all the pictures I included here) and she especially enjoyed the foot-shaped lolly pop!  Thanks, TinySoles!  Afterwards she performed a series of wind-sprints back and forth across the house in her new shoes until she had to sit down, nearly gasping for breath.  Here she is running by at full speed.

BUY IT
You can purchase these awesome shoes and other accessories from the TinySoles website.  I love their Daily Deals section where TinySoles offers a new deal daily Monday through Friday at an amazing price until it’s gone. You can shop by age, style and brand so searching is very easy.  All of the products at TinySoles are child tested and Mom approved, offering shoes from newborn to kids size 13.  TinySoles offers super fast shipping and FREE SHIPPING on orders over $20 (and that includes Hawaii, Alaska, APO/FPO and Canada).
