CLOSED - Sunglass Warehouse Review & Giveaway

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I was very pleased to receive a pair of sunglasses from Sunglass Warehouse.  I picked my top three favorites and received the pair pictured here.  I have to admit that given the fabulous pricing online, I was a bit skeptical as to the quality of these sunglasses.  I was very pleasantly surprised by this awesome pair of sunglasses and can honestly say I enjoy wearing them!  The lenses are perfectly tinted and the frame is nicely polished and smooth.  Lily and I both love to wear our sunglasses as you can see!

My little gardener!

Monday, March 29, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I know every parent thinks the world of their child (as they should!) but my little Lily never ceases to amaze me.  The other day we driving home from daycare/work and I hear a little voice exclaim from that back seat "I saw a forsythia, mommy!"  I had to ask her to repeat herself twice to make sure I heard correctly.  For you gardening gurus, you know forsythias are the lovely yellow flowering bushes that bloom so nicely in the spring.  Apparently that morning on their drive to daycare, Adam had been schooling Lily as to the proper names for various flowering shrubs and it stuck.  I was so impressed that she remembered given that she isn't even 2.5 yet!  Lily also points out the daffodils, pear trees and the camellias in our front yard.  Every night we say "goodnight" to the two white blooming camellias right outside the front door (one is pictured below).  Who knows, maybe one day she will grow up to be a botanist!

CLOSED - Duck Duck Green Organic Baby Outfit Giveaway

Sunday, March 28, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

In my search for unique companies and products, I stumbled upon Duck Duck Green, a cool Chicago-based company that features healthy and adorable green products.  Their products also have a modern flair that I really appreciate.  I read a little more about the company and was impressed with their products and philosophy.  I also enjoyed reading their blog and could definitely relate to some of their posts.

CLOSED - Piggy Paint Review & Giveaway

Wednesday, March 24, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Oh what a happy day it was when Piggy Paint arrived in the mail!  I had been telling Lily about it for a few days and she was thrilled to finally get her own bottle of pink Piggy Pain nail polish (her FAVORITE color!).  She had to try it immediately and she sat very still as I painted her nails.  The nail polish really had no abraisive scent and dried pretty quickly.  I was impressed!  It smelled a little bit like chocolate to me - but maybe I was just craving something sweet :)  Lily loved her nail polish so much she was hesitant to get her hands wet for fear it would wash away.  What a fabulous product for little kids!

CLOSED - Snorg Tees Review & Giveaway

Monday, March 22, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

A few weeks ago, Snorg tees sent me one of their crazy tee shirts for review pictured here.  Since Atlanta weather was absolutely fabulous this past weekend, I finally had an opportunity to wear it!  The tee shirt is nice and long and fits very well.  I was glad I requested a medium since the tees seem to run a little small.  Lily quite enjoyed seeing mommy walking around with a cat tee shirt all day long.

Carpet CPR Spot & Stain Remover Review & Free Sample Offer

Sunday, March 21, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

We have two cats.  Cats occasionally get hair balls.  I try to brush the cats to minimize fur and shedding but to be honest, the last thing I want to do late in the evening after getting my daughter settled to sleep and cleaning up the house a little is sit and brush a cat.  They vomit these lovely hair clump, mixed with cat food of course, at least once a month in our house. I swear that every time a cat has to vomit, they make a bee line for any carpeted surface.  We have plenty of hardwood and tile, which would be easy to clean, but the cats prefer to vomit on the carpet.  Ask any cat owner, they will tell you it is true.  At times a cat will vomit when we are not home under a bed or in some obscure place that we do not notice until sometime later.  Lovely, I know.  Take two cats and add a two-year-old and you know we have to have a bottle of carpet cleaner close at hand.

Vosges Haut-Chocolate Review

Friday, March 19, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

How lucky am I to come home to a package of Vosges chocolates on my doorstep!  Vosges sent me the wonderful items pictures below to review.  I had to refrain from ripping into the packages immediately, since I wanted to take a nice picture first, plus it was dinner time...it was not easy to wait but they say patience is a virtue.
The Easter bunnies and eggs would be the ideal gift for the discerning chocolate lover in your life.  I decided not to be greedy and shared all of these treats with my husband over the course of the past week.  Each night after Lily was tucked in and sleeping sweetly, we sampled some of the delicious chocolates together.

CLOSED - Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream Review & Giveaway

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I absolutely LOVE trying new beauty products and was thrilled to receive some awesome products from Yu-Be to review.  I came across Yu-Be online and found out the brand was #1 in Japan and making a name for themselves in the US market as well.  The products have been featured in Lucky Magazine, Elle, InStyle, and others.  I was so thrilled when Yu-Be sent me some of their fabulous products to try.  I am a lotion and potion junkie!  I received Yu-Be's Foaming Skin Polish, Body Lotion, 1.25oz Lotion Tube, and Lip Therapy.

I have to say, out of the four awesome products that I tried, the scrub was my favorite.  It is a real SCRUB, no one of those whimpy scrubs that leaves much to be desired.  I tried it on my face, body and hands and have to say it was a little too strong for my face, but worked extremely well on my body and hands.  Given that the winter leaves us with a lot of dry skin, I think all of us need a little extra exfoliation.  After the scrub, my skin needed some extra moisture and the Yu-Be lotion was thick yet not too greasy.  My daughter liked it as well and told me "I want some of the yellow lotion, Mommy!"  Lily and I both like to end the day with some pampering :)

BUY IT
Yu-Be can be purchase at a  variety of retailers near you such as Sephora, Whole Foods, Beauty.com and many US and International Retailers.

CLOSED - LuLu Lathers Vintage Felted Soap Review & Giveaway

Monday, March 15, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

LuLu Lathers makes felted soap - a luxurious handmade soap that is wrapped in softly spun wool to create the ultimate lather.  Each bar is soap and a washcloth all in one and is made using homemade soap.  I personally have never heard about felting before so I did a little research to learn about it.  LuLu Lather's owner, Erin Adams has tweaked and created her own process for making this special felted soap from a tutorial she found on the internet.

Erin uses loose corriedale wool and merino wool to wrap around the soap. The concoction gets dipped in boiling water, some essential oils and dish soap and is worked over and over again by hand until the wool eventually encases the soap.  How very cool and inventive!  To finish off her beautiful product, Erin uses hemp, felt paper flowers and buttons to label each bar.  Each creation is 100% unique in color, scent and shape and specially hand made for you.

LuLu Lathers sent me the three bars pictured here to try.  They smelled wonderful and were wrapped in up in green tissue paper.  I couldn't wait to try out this very special soap.  Each bar was adorned with a cute button flower (which will be reused in an art project for Lily!) and a crafted in lovely blend of colors.  They almost looked too pretty to use!  I tried the Mango bar first and absolutely loved the scent and texture of the wool outside.  I felt like it exfoliated and cleaned my skin very well, and it did not feel too harsh or abrasive.

These bars would make a lovely gift for anyone in your life that needs a little colorful pick-me-up or some pampering!

BUY IT
LuLu Lathers vintage felted soap is available at Erin's Etsy shop.  Each soap is a one of a kind creation by Erin (and her little helper!) and retails online between $8-10 per bar.  If you live in the NC area, you can also find her soap in Greensboro at Just Be and Mary Contrary and in Beaufort at Art and Soul.

WIN IT

Leather CPR Cleaner & Conditioner Review and Free Sample Offer

Monday, March 15, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I am happy to say that my spring cleaning trend continues!  After tackling my counter tops the other day with the awesome Granite CPR Cleaner and Polish, I decided to move on to the leather furniture.  I was fortunate to receive some Leather CPR Cleanser & Conditioner to review.  Leather CPR can also be used to treat leather furniture, automobile upholstery, jackets, shoes and boots, purses and bags, motorcycle leather, baseball gloves and equine tack.  It is safe to use on exotic leather such as alligator and ostrich, but avoid using on porous leather such as buckskin or suede.

The first area I attacked was the downstairs sitting area that has a leather couch and chair.  I tested a small area of my downstairs couch before proceeding and was pleased with the result.  I used a sponge to apply the product and rubbed the lotion into the couch in sections, then used a cloth to remove the excess product when needed.

Typically the cleaner was absorbed really quickly into the leather on my couch.  I was really impressed with how soft and supple the leather was after this treatment.  Leather CPR did not have a strong scent or greasy residue.  In a short period of time, I was able to treat and clean a large leather couch and my big comfy leather chair.  Afterwards, I tackled the leather couch in our master bedroom sitting area and was really pleased with the results.  I intend to try this product on my leather coat and current purse that I am carrying, as well as on my car interior.

Carpet CPR Spot & Stain Remover is available nationwide at Bed Bath & Beyond or online on the CPR website. Suggested retail price is $6.95 for a 4-ounce tube, $9.95 for an 8-ounce tube, $12.95 for a 12-ounce tube and $24.95 for a 32-ounce refill bottle.

Friday, March 12, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Introduced in 2009, Pedia-Lax® Fiber Gummies, are a daily fiber supplement made just for kids ages 2-11 by Fleet®, a trusted brand for digestive health for more than 100 years. Each penguin-shaped, great tasting fiber gummy has 1.5 grams of fiber, is sugar-free, calorie-free, gluten-free and made with natural fruit flavors.  Fiber Gummies are also dentist approved since Xylitol, the sweetener used in Pedia-Lax Fiber Gummies may reduce the risk of cavities!

A recommended serving of three gummies every day is equal to a half cup of broccoli!  Fiber Gummies are a great way to supplement the fiber found in fruits, vegetables and other fiber-rich foods in your child’s daily diet.  My daughter is a huge fan of veggies (her favorite car snack on the way home from daycare is a cucumber which she eats fully, skin and all) but I know some parents are not as lucky to have such veggie lovers.  I have had Lily try these gummies and she likes them a lot.  Usually I give her one as a post-meal treat and she always says "I want the yummy red one, mommy!"  Such a cutie :)

Granite CPR Cleaner & Polish Review and Free Sample Offer

Friday, March 12, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

One of my biggest pet peeves is a dirty kitchen.  I find I am always wiping down the counters or the sink with bleach wipes.  Sometimes I wonder, should I be using these products on my granite counter tops?  I am ashamed to say since moving into our house nearly eight years ago, we have only used a granite sealer on the countertops once.  I was very intriqued to learn about Granite CPR Cleaner & Polish recently, and even more pleased to recieve my own tube of this product to review.

Granite CPR is a cleaner and polish all in one and works on granite, stone, marble, smooth polished stone countertops, and even imitation stone.  I planned to attack my kitchen counters first.  I removed everything currently cluttering the counters (fruit bowls, cutting board, mail bin, etc) and wiped the counters with a moist towel.  I used an old rag to rub some of the product all over the counters, then another fresh rag to polish the counters clean.  The scent was nice and not too overwhelming.  My counters look fabulous!  I can honestly say I was very impressed with this product.  I have walked through my kitchen several times this evening and admired my lovely kitchen counters.  Usually I purchase granite wipes at the grocery store and they never leave my counters with such a sheen or protective barrier.

A new computer specially built for me?

Tuesday, March 09, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I love my husband.  Deeply.  Recently I made some comments about my horribly slow desktop computer.  Occasionally I VPN to my work machine (don't ask me what this means - all I know is that I connect to my work computer and it is as if I am sitting there in front of my work station in the privacy of my own home) in the evenings to catch up on some work.  Apparently I have been cursing out, I mean, complaining about my slow desktop for a while now.  Adam and I discussed purchasing a new desktop but decided this one was sufficient for my evening and weekend needs.  I vaguely recall Adam saying something about discovering some great build-your-own-computer store near his work but to be honest it went in one ear and out the other.  I was mildly intriqued, but really, computers?  Electronics?  Technology?  That's what he is for, right?  Apparently Adam took my lack of protest to mean "YES GO BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER" because that is what he is doing right now.

I was told from the time I hit the power button, it will take 10 seconds to start up completely.  Hmm.  We'll see :)  When I asked what this would set me back I got a "well, you don't want to know but I got GREAT DEALS on all the components."  Again, I repeat - I love my husband deeply!

Ever since I discovered Etsy shops, I have been amazed at the numerous unique and handmade  products for sale on Etsy.  I am so impressed with the creative men and women selling their goods online.  One great shop I recently came across is Zillows - Zany Pillows with Personality!  Now, we have plenty of throw pillows in our house on various couches and chairs but none are quite as adorable as Zillow pillows made by Mandy.  Browsing through her inventory makes me want to redecorate and add some color to our home.
In addition to her Etsy shop, Zillow Pillows are now sold at Mod Pod in downtown Corvallis, OR - definitely check it out if you are lucky enough to live in the area!  Unfortunately I am all the way across the country in Atlanta!  Zillow pillows are created in a smoke-free environment and Mandy tries to ships her pillows the next business day.  She invites input from buyers or special requests.  Feel free to check out Zillows blog as well.  I read some of her entries and her grandpa story made me smile and get a little teary-eyed.  Wish I could meet Mandy in person!  She seems like a lovely human being.

I'm very please to announce that Zillow Pillows is giving away her Little Bird Don't Be Shy pillow pictured here to one lucky reader! This pillow is one of my favorites - lucky you!!

Getting my seeds ready for spring!

Saturday, March 06, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

One of my favorite gardening tasks is collecting seeds.  When I was moving from Chicago to Atlanta in September of 2001, Adam and I spent the night at my parents house before getting into the U-Haul and driving across the country with all of our worldly possessions (and a super cranky cat).  I remember seeing my parent's garden with filled pretty colored zinnias and other flowers.  To my surprise, my mom plucked some of the brown dried flower heads off her zinnias, put them in a brown paper bag and sent them with me to Atlanta.  That following spring, those seeds turned into gorgeous flowers in my very first garden in my very first home.  Every year since then I have harvested seeds from those zinnias as well as from other flowers and plants we accumulated over the years.  I have used the seeds each spring in my own garden and shared them with friends and family.  Sometimes I mail them to random friends, leave them on co-workers' desks or drop them off in my neighbors' mailboxes.  I just love sharing seeds!  It always amazes me how much can grow from something so little.
All summer and fall I monitor various plants in my garden for spent blooms and collect seeds to save.  This past year Lily helped me collect a bunch of those seeds, and we had a wonderful time filling jars together.  She marveled at the black seeds, furry seeds, little red seeds, spiky seeds and so on.  I look forward to spending some time with Lily this spring digging holes and planting the seeds in our yard.  Hopefully one day I can share seeds from my garden with Lily for her very first garden in her own very first home.

I am getting so excited about spring!  In the next few days I am going to take inventory of my seeds and make little packets to share with friends and family.  If you are an avid gardener (or just starting out) and want to experiment with some seeds, leave a comment or send me an email and I will see if I have some to share with some of you out there as well!

CLOSED - Formula II Skin Care Cream Review & Giveaway

Wednesday, March 03, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

Recently I was lucky enough to win a large tub of Formula II Skin Care cream on twitter.  I had stumbled upon them by accident and entered to win the lotion on a whim, so I was very excited to win given that I am a total lotion and potion junkie.  I received the cream in the mail the other week with some information about it.  I was surprised to learn how many uses the cream had.  It can be used to heal and protect dry skin in the cold winter months.  It works well as a diaper cream.  It can heal and protect chapped lips.  It can protect cuts and scrapes.  I tried it out on my hands right away.  The cream is thick but absorbs very quickly and leaves your skin feeling silky and soft.

Formula II Cream has only 7 simple ingredients and it is fragrance-free, alcohol-free and lanolin-free. Mr. Isabella originally made Formula II Skin Care Cream right in his home kitchen. The product was originally used by just family and friends until customers wanted to purchase the cream.

I wash my hands a lot in the winter, and I find that I reapply the same hand lotion over and over again, only to end up with dry skin.  Now that I have a jar of Formula II Cream on my desk, my hands stay nice and moisturized even after washing.  My husband has very dry hands and never bothers with lotion even though I have bottles of it next to every sink in the house.  I had him try this cream and he really liked it.  I actually saw him using it on his own, without any prodding from me!  Shocking!  I am definitely a fan of the product and am so glad I was able to try it out.  I've used it on my lips and feet as well.  I have also used this on Lily's delicate nose and cheeks since Atlanta has had entirely too much cold weather lately.  She is happy when I let her spread some of the cream on with her own little finger.
I liked the cream so much, I contacted the company to see if they would be interested in hosting a giveaway of their cream.  Formula II Skin Care Cream has sponsored a giveaway of 2 of their 8 oz. jars of cream to 2 lucky winners.  To enter, follow the instructions below.
