The Fan Wiring Project of 2011

Friday, December 31, 2010 Posted by Aleksandra Nearing

I've mentioned before that my husband is super handy.  He's built a deck (OK, it took him 4 years and a final threat from me that it will be burned down if not completed, but it's an awesome deck) wired outlets, installed lights, cut crown molding, fixed the dishwasher, built retaining walls, and much, much more.  However, recently we came to the conclusion that each project has two certainties.

#1 The project will take at least twice as long as originally estimated to complete.
#2 There will be blood, sweat, tears and cursing involved.

Anyway, we have a sitting area downstairs that could use a fan.  There's no fan box in the ceiling so naturally, Adam is up for the challenge of wiring one so he could then install a fan.  I come home yesterday to find this set up in my TV area (thank god we don't watch TV over there).

Adam's Master Plan:
1) Push a wire into the ceiling and aim it towards the utility room 10 feet away.
2) Situate a body in the tiny, cramped space between the first and second floor to catch the aforementioned wire and drag it into the utility room some 10 feet away, then wire it to some existing outlet (or something like that - come on, I'M not the handy one).
3) Install the fan into the pretty wired outlet.

He estimates this entire project will take 2 hours (insert hysterical laughter here).  He also tells me that since I'm smaller, it might make more sense if I crawl into the space between the first and second floor to catch this wire he's going to push towards the utility room.  I quickly squash his dreams with a big, fat NO.

Into the ceiling/wall space he goes.  See his feet dangling in the tiny little hole next to the HVAC unit?  Let me also tell you the cats' litter box is in this utility room so everything is covered in a fine dust of litter.  Lovely!  Yeah, I was DEFINITELY not crawling in there.

Lily gets all into this project and first draws a picture of daddy working.  After watching me stand on the ladder for about 20 minutes shoving the wire into a tiny hole in the ceiling and listening to muffled cries of "push it towards the right, make sure it goes right towards the utility room" from Adam who has wedged his 6'2 frame into the ceiling/floor space, she thinks it would be better to draw us some instructions.  Clearly we're confused and Lily needs to come to the rescue.
I encourage this since I don't want her to keep trying to climb up the ladder I am teetering on.  Three sets of instructions later, we have made no progress.

After a while, we gave up.  It was bath time, afterall, and Adam slid himself down from the tiny floor-attic-ceiling-space in disgust.

Lily was quite concerned and asked "Are we going to keep him up there forever?" No, honey, your father said it will only take two hours...

Sorry it didn't work out. My husband always comes up with master plans like that, only he used to be an electrician, so he's not only done it on new houses, but old ones and he knows lots of crazy little tricks (which he acquired over about 10 yrs.) His plans always work, but they always end up costing twice the estimate and twice the time.

LOL I give him lots of credit - in the end he will get the job done :)

Nothing like my Dad's handy work which was always over time, over budget and a temporary fix at best.

Happy New Year's - May all Hubbies be out of the ceiling before midnight.

OMG- have you been to MY house at repair time?

Ours is always 3-4 hours over! FUNNY- can't wait to see how it turns out.

ps- i used that same burn the deck routine at our old house before we put it up for sale-amazing how quickly it got done!

It is amazing how "they" are almost all alike. A few years back he installed a laminate floor, but no trim. Yes, we have a retaining wall, but it is shorter than originally planned. We are going to tackle a bamboo floor together....that will be worthy of a post someday! Happy New Year!

This was very entertaining and I can so relate! We just put in an attic access in our hallway and our 3 yo was also trying to get up the ladder to "help" - loved your pic! Just found your blog today, and with this one post, you've snagged me already! Thanks, and I'll be checking back for more updates on your projects :)
